Stromness

Took an early morning zodiac to a king penguin colony.  It was very foggy and we lost sight of the boat about 100 yards away from it.  The colony was full of thousands of pairs and we could pretty much just walk among the crowd.  It was raining so I didn't get many pictures.  Their behaviors were interesting because they were all at different stages.  Some with eggs, some with young, some molting, some full and some hungry.  They all had different things going on and pretty much ignored each other, but still clumped together.

In the afternoon we went to shore near an old whaling station Stromness.  This is were Shackleton first encountered civilization after being stuck in Antarctic ice for a winter, sailing across 800 miles of open sea in an open boat, and then climbing over the mountains of South Georgia.  We hiked up to a waterfall named after him.  We were hoping to hike part of the path he took but it was too foggy this morning and we can't hike anywhere the ship can't see us.  Lots of seals along the route and quite a few King penguins.  An Antarctic Tern had a nest nearby and aggressively dive bombed those that came near it.  Made it tough to photograph.
